Starting with a clean sheet of paper it was determined that the new breed should have the following traits in order to meet the initial “easy care” criteria goal set by Dawson Snr:
- good shedding ability
- good fertility
- good milking and mothering instinct
- Low/moderate birth weights
- good growth
- Good muscling
- High yielding carcass across medium-heavy weight carcasses
- the right amount fat
- Ability to maintain exceptional do ability and hardiness of the Dorper breed
- Sound Structure
- Mild temperament
- Easy care
